The European Parliament’s economic committee has backed draft rules for the digital euro, moving the project closer to negotiations with EU governments and the European Commission. The ECB plans to begin a 12-month pilot in the second half of 2027, ahead of a potential full launch in 2029

The project is intended to provide a central bank-backed digital payment option and reduce Europe’s reliance on non-European card networks. Proposed safeguards include limits on individual holdings, no interest payments and restrictions on how long businesses can hold digital euros, addressing concerns about deposit outflows from commercial banks.
