National Australia Bank to Eliminate 2,500 Roles by Mid-2027, Targeting Corporate Layers Over Front Line #

National Australia Bank (NAB) has announced plans to cut up to 2,500 positions, roughly 6% of its total workforce, by the end of its 2027 financial year, as Australia’s Big Four lenders continue a sector-wide push to trim overhead costs and redirect capital toward technology investment.

According to a filing submitted to the Australian Securities Exchange on Tuesday, the first phase of reductions will proceed quickly, with up to 1,500 roles slated to go before the end of calendar year 2026. A further 1,000 positions are expected to be eliminated in the first half of 2027. Alongside the internal headcount reduction, the bank confirmed it will substantially pare back its use of external consultants and contractors.

NAB Chief Executive Andrew Irvine sought to insulate customer-facing operations from the restructuring, saying there would be no material impact on frontline staff. The cuts are concentrated on corporate overhead and management layers, including strategy, transformation and project management teams, as well as back-office functions such as compliance, risk and business services. The bank also said it is making deeper changes at the senior management level, broadening the responsibilities of individual leaders while reducing duplication.

“These changes are expected to improve outcomes for customers by reducing duplication and speeding up decision making,” Irvine said in a statement. The bank cited “challenging economic conditions, increasing customer expectations, competitive intensity and rapid technological change” as the forces driving the overhaul, though the official announcement made no direct reference to artificial intelligence.

NAB expects to book a pre-tax restructuring charge of approximately A$300 million, with further financial detail to be provided at its full-year results on 5 November 2026. The bank employs more than 41,000 staff worldwide. While domestic roles are being cut, NAB has simultaneously been expanding its offshore presence, with around 7,000 employees now based in India and Vietnam, up from 1,800 in early 2023.

The move follows a broader pattern of workforce reduction across Australia’s major banks. Rival ANZ announced 3,500 job cuts and the removal of around 1,000 contractors in September 2025. Advances in workflow automation and digital platforms have allowed large lenders to operate with leaner back-office structures, even as they commit to multi-billion-dollar technology investment programmes.
