Google Cloud Power Failure in London Knocks Out Revolut, HSBC and Lloyds Banking Services #
A power incident at Google Cloud’s London data centre caused an outage on Monday that disrupted banking apps, delivery services and court video hearings across the UK. Revolut, HSBC, Lloyds, Bank of Scotland and Halifax were among the affected institutions.
The failure originated in Google Cloud’s europe-west2 region, where a power event caused a zone-level failure. Google’s status page reported “elevated errors and intermittent network failures” across the region and said its engineering team was working to resolve the problem. Google later confirmed the power event had been mitigated, advised affected customers to migrate workloads to another zone or region, and acknowledged there were “no workarounds for now” in the immediate aftermath.
Revolut was among the hardest-hit services. The neobank’s status page listed card payments, ATM withdrawals, account logins, identity verification, transfers, chat support, stocks trading and crypto trading as all affected at the same time. A Revolut spokesperson said customers’ money and data remained safe and that the company had been working to restore services since identifying the problem in the early morning. Downdetector recorded more than 1,500 user reports of Revolut problems during Tuesday morning.
Lloyds Bank and Halifax both acknowledged the disruption on social media, saying some customers were experiencing difficulty with their apps and online services and that work was under way to fix the issue. Bank of Scotland, also part of Lloyds Banking Group, issued a similar statement. HSBC customers also filed access complaints on Downdetector in large numbers.
The outage reached beyond banking. Royal Mail, DPD, Rightmove and BT were all affected, as was the Cloud Video Platform used by courts across England and Wales to host remote hearings. Budgeting app Emma posted on X that it had gone offline because of the Google Cloud disruption, describing it as a technical, not a security, incident.
The single zone failure in one region simultaneously affected consumer banking, retail logistics, broadband and court services across the UK.
