Zumo Builds Living Compliance Tool as UK Crypto Authorisation Deadline Looms #

Edinburgh-based digital assets infrastructure firm Zumo has released a UK Crypto Regulation Tracker, giving crypto businesses a continuously updated reference for compliance obligations under the country’s forthcoming authorisation regime.

Unlike static compliance documents already circulating in the market, the tool refreshes automatically as the Financial Conduct Authority issues new regulatory papers. Zumo says a fixed snapshot of the rules carries significant risk in an environment where guidance is still being refined, and that firms relying on outdated materials could find themselves scrambling as the deadline approaches.

The FCA opened its firm-authorisation application gateway on 30 September 2026, with the comprehensive cryptoasset regulatory regime scheduled to take full effect in October 2027. Any business serving UK customers that fails to secure authorisation by then risks losing access to one of the world’s largest retail crypto markets.

Research published alongside the tracker, drawn from a Zumo survey of cryptoasset service providers active in the UK, found that 70 percent of respondents identified losing access to UK customers as the primary risk of falling short on readiness. Half cited fears of financial penalties or regulatory sanctions, and an equal share worried about lost revenue or market share. When asked about their single biggest operational challenge, roughly three in ten pointed to the difficulty of mapping their services to specific regulated activities and determining which permissions they need.

Nick Jones, Zumo’s founder and chief executive, said the tracker reflects an operator’s perspective rather than that of a law firm or consultancy. “Everyone else publishing a UK regime tracker is a law firm or a consultancy,” he said, adding that the company’s own experience preparing for authorisation informed the tool’s design.

Jones said firms that have committed to the UK market now face a complex authorisation process with little time to spare. “Firms have decided the UK is worth the effort, but must overcome a number of obstacles to be ready in time to realise the opportunity,” he said, noting that failure to secure authorisation would mean effective exclusion from the UK market.

Zumo Financial Services has held a place on the FCA’s cryptoasset register since 2021 and is itself preparing to transition to full authorisation under the new framework. The company offers modular, API-driven digital asset infrastructure to banks, fintechs and crypto businesses building UK-regulated crypto services without constructing compliance stacks from scratch.
