Citigroup launches cardholder-data advertising platform, moves to acquire Kard Financial #
Citigroup has launched Citi Commerce Media, an advertising platform that uses the bank’s cardholder transaction data to help brand marketers target and measure campaigns. The launch puts Citi in competition with Chase, Mastercard and PayPal in the transaction-data advertising market.
Announced on Wednesday, the platform draws on Citi’s network of more than 70 million U.S. customers and the roughly 6.5 billion annual transactions they generate across more than 700 spending categories. The company said those data assets support three offerings: audience identification, which helps brands reach consumers as purchase decisions form; media distribution, which places ads on Citi.com, the Citi Mobile App and additional paid media properties; and closed-loop measurement, which tracks campaign performance against actual transaction outcomes and calculates return on ad spend.
Abhinav Anand, Citi’s Head of Value Cards, Lending and Commerce, said the platform is designed to help partners “better anticipate consumer needs, reach the right audience at the right moment and drive strong business outcomes.” Pilot campaigns across retail, technology, payments, beauty and wellness categories showed performance of up to 5x incremental return on ad spend for at least one online retailer, according to the company’s announcement.
The launch follows Citi’s August disclosure that its U.S. Consumer Cards business had agreed to acquire Kard Financial, a commerce media and rewards technology firm. The deal has not yet closed. Citi said the pending acquisition is expected to expand the platform’s targeting and loyalty capabilities once completed.
The platform is part of a restructuring at Citi. Chief executive Jane Fraser merged the bank’s Branded Cards and Retail Services units into a single U.S. Consumer Cards division as part of a five-business restructuring presented at its 2026 Investor Day, with digital commerce identified as a priority growth area. Research firm eMarketer has projected the commerce media category could reach $100 billion globally by 2028. Banks with large credit card businesses have increasingly sought to monetize their transaction data as an advertising asset.
