Worldline, ING and Visa Complete Live Agentic Payment Transaction in Germany #
French payments group Worldline, Dutch bank ING, and Visa executed a live, end-to-end agentic payment transaction in Germany, the companies announced on July 2.
The transaction was conducted under Visa’s Agentic Ready Programme, which both Worldline and ING have now joined. It demonstrated that AI agent-initiated payments can operate within existing European regulatory frameworks, including the Strong Customer Authentication requirements under PSD2. In the pilot scenario, a consumer defined the parameters of a purchase, specifying what to buy and when, then delegated execution to a merchant AI agent. The agent identified a suitable product, and the consumer authenticated the transaction using Visa Payment Passkeys, a biometric-based credential.
The companies said the model is designed so merchants can accept agent-initiated orders with the same confidence as a conventional online purchase, without building bespoke infrastructure to support AI-driven shopping. The companies cited delayed capture and biometric authentication as features enabling more flexible, auditable purchasing.
Hans Overeem, Head of Payments at ING Netherlands, said the milestone demonstrates that agentic payments can be both user-friendly and secure, with biometrics and delayed settlement allowing for adaptable yet safe transactions. Mathieu Altwegg, Head of Product and Solutions at Visa Europe, said the collaboration shows “how that future can begin to take shape in Europe,” adding that the Agentic Ready Programme is helping bring trusted payment credentials and consumer control into emerging agentic commerce use cases.
The July announcement is the second major live milestone for Worldline in this space within weeks. In June, Worldline and ING completed a separate live agentic payment transaction, that time in partnership with Mastercard and covering multiple European markets. The two transactions show Worldline working with competing card networks to build infrastructure for agentic commerce across the continent.
Worldline, listed on Euronext Paris, describes agentic payments as a strategic priority and has launched Connect AI, a developer portal that aggregates emerging agentic protocols from Google, OpenAI, Visa, and Mastercard into a single platform for merchants and financial institutions.
