Visa survey finds most Americans use AI for shopping but few trust it to make payments #

Most American consumers have adopted AI assistants for shopping tasks, but far fewer are willing to let those agents make purchases on their behalf, according to a Visa survey of 2,065 U.S. consumers.

The survey, part of what Visa called its inaugural Trust Index for agentic commerce, found that 72% of respondents have used an AI assistant. Only 23% said they trust generative AI to execute payment transactions on their behalf.

Trust rose when Visa’s own brand was specified: 61% of respondents said they would trust Visa to handle agentic transactions, nearly three times the figure for unbranded AI. Visa attributed the difference to brand recognition and its security infrastructure.

“While we’re still in the early days, trust will be foundational to driving agentic commerce adoption, much like it was for e-commerce and mobile payments,” said Oliver Jenkyn, Group President at Visa.

The survey also found that 39% of respondents said they would trust AI-initiated payments if they retained the ability to override transactions. Visa pointed to consumer controls such as spending limits and merchant restrictions as a path to broader adoption.

Among business leaders surveyed, more than half said they are ready for AI-to-AI negotiation, suggesting corporate buyers may move faster than individual consumers.

Visa said the Trust Index will be an ongoing series tracking consumer sentiment as AI-powered commerce develops. The release accompanies Visa’s Intelligent Commerce initiative, which aims to build infrastructure for agent-initiated transactions with issuers, merchants, and technology developers.
