Legal & General creates unified tech, data and AI role, hires former Schroders CTO to lead it #
Legal & General (L&G) has appointed Jamie Ovenden as Group Chief Technology, Data and Innovation Officer, the UK insurance and asset management company announced on 3 September 2026. Ovenden joins from Schroders, where he was Group Chief Technology Officer and led the firm’s global digital transformation and innovation agenda.
The role consolidates technology, data, artificial intelligence, and platform functions under a single leader for the first time. L&G said the change reflects its ambition to become a simpler, more focused, and more competitive business. Ovenden will also sit on the Group Management Committee.
Ovenden has a background in digital, cloud, data, and AI. He joined Schroders in December 2019 as Global Head of Enterprise Technology, Digital and Innovation and was promoted to CTO in December 2020. He previously held senior technology roles in retail at Arcadia Group and Dune London.
Group CEO António Simões said technology, data, and AI are central to the next phase of L&G’s growth, adding that the company intends to embed digital capabilities more tightly into its core business operations.
In a statement, Ovenden said he was joining at an important moment for the business, pointing to L&G’s clear strategy and strong foundations, and said he intends to help shape how technology and AI support the group’s next phase of growth and deliver for customers, clients, and shareholders. The appointment is subject to regulatory approval.
L&G also announced that Katie Worgan, currently Group Chief Operating Officer, will step down at the end of 2026. The company did not provide succession plans for the COO role. Simões became group CEO at the start of 2024.
