ACI Worldwide to Acquire Cranium Ventures, Adding Cloud-Native Card Switching to Connetic Platform #
Omaha-based payments technology firm ACI Worldwide has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Cranium Ventures, a privately held company specializing in cloud-native, microservices-based card payment switching, according to an announcement distributed via Business Wire. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Cranium Ventures’ switching technology will be folded into ACI Connetic for Cards, the card-focused layer of ACI’s Connetic platform, which launched in March 2026. ACI first unveiled Connetic in 2025 and positions it as the payments industry’s first unified cloud-native hub, consolidating account-to-account payments, card processing, and AI-powered fraud prevention within a single architecture.
According to the announcement, the acquisition is designed to accelerate an already-planned expansion of the Connetic for Cards roadmap, bringing forward card switching capabilities that would otherwise have taken longer to build organically. ACI’s acquiring, issuing, ATM, and self-service banking solutions currently handle more than 300 billion card transactions each year. The company said that volume puts Cranium Ventures’ technology in position for large-scale deployment from the outset.
Cranium Ventures’ co-founders are expected to join ACI when the transaction closes. ACI also said it intends to continue supporting existing customers of Cranium’s SYNAP product after the deal completes.
The acquisition is targeted to close before the end of the third quarter of 2026, subject to customary conditions. Cranium Ventures had been listed as a competitor to ACI in the payments firm’s most recent annual report, filed in February 2026, less than six months before the deal was announced.
The acquisition continues ACI’s effort to consolidate payment rails onto a single platform. Earlier this year the company announced that ACI Connetic supports eight major U.S. payment networks on one cloud-native platform, including FedNow, The Clearing House RTP, and Zelle. Adding microservices-based card switching through Cranium Ventures extends that approach to the card side, where legacy switching infrastructure remains a long-standing modernization challenge for banks and processors.
