CIB Egypt Gets Preliminary Central Bank Approval to Launch yomo, a $300 Million Digital Bank Venture #
Egypt’s largest private-sector lender, Commercial International Bank (CIB), has received preliminary approval from the Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) to establish a standalone digital bank under the brand name yomo, the bank announced on 20 August 2026.
The approval was granted under Egypt’s digital banking regulatory framework, introduced in 2023. CIB is committing $300 million to yomo Holding’s digital banking platform. yomo will operate as an independently licensed, digitally native institution, legally and operationally separate from its parent, rather than as a digital product within the existing CIB infrastructure.
The preliminary licence allows yomo to advance its operational, technological, and customer-readiness preparations ahead of a full service launch, which remains conditional on final regulatory sign-off from the CBE.
Group Chief Executive Hisham Ezz Al-Arab framed the venture as a central pillar of CIB’s existing five-year strategy, citing growth opportunities in Egypt’s mass consumer and micro- and small-business segments as the commercial rationale. “Egypt’s banking industry is poised to benefit from the increased growth opportunities we are seeing across the mass consumer and small and micro business segments, and the yomo digital banking platform places CIB at the centre of that opportunity,” he said in the announcement.
The newly appointed yomo Chief Executive, Rashwan Hammady, described obtaining the preliminary licence as a decisive but preliminary milestone, saying the institution aims to set a new benchmark for digital banking in Egypt by offering a simpler, more intuitive customer experience with a focus on accessibility and customer autonomy.
With more than five decades of banking history, CIB has positioned yomo to combine its established brand trust and governance standards with the operational speed expected of a digital-first bank. The venture targets everyday retail customers as well as micro and small enterprises, segments that have historically been underserved by traditional branch-based banking in Egypt.
The CBE formalised its digital banking framework in 2023. CIB’s yomo is among the institutions to have received preliminary approval under that regime.
