Google Pay Debuts ‘Ask Google Pay’ in India, Bringing Gemini-Powered Spending Insights to Millions of UPI Users #
Google has launched a Gemini-powered conversational AI feature inside Google Pay in India, letting users query their own financial data in natural language rather than scrolling through transaction histories. The feature, called Ask Google Pay, began rolling out on July 29.
Ask Google Pay draws on a user’s Google Pay transaction history and credit report data to answer questions about spending habits, savings opportunities, and suitable financial products. A user can ask how much they spent on dining in a given month, or what steps might improve their credit score. The assistant responds in plain language with summaries and suggestions rather than raw data.
The feature supports both text and voice input and is available in ten Indian languages, a design choice Google says is intended to make personal finance management accessible beyond English-speaking urban users. The company has said the tool is meant for financial education rather than regulated advice, and that participation is entirely opt-in, with users retaining control over their data.
Beyond spending analysis, Ask Google Pay can explain financial concepts including systematic investment plans, compound interest, and the differences between India’s old and new tax regimes. Google described the feature as aimed at improving financial literacy and broadening access to credit information across the country.
Alongside the AI assistant, Google also announced an expansion of Flex, its app-based digital credit card experience. Originally launched in December 2025 through a partnership with Axis Bank, Flex is now being extended to SBI Card, one of India’s largest credit card issuers.
Together, the two announcements extend Google Pay’s scope in India, the world’s largest UPI market, from payment processing into AI-driven financial analysis and credit products. Other payment platforms have also added generative AI features in recent months.
