HSBC Picks Singapore for Global AI Hub, Plans to Hire More Than 100 Specialists #

HSBC will open a Global AI Centre of Excellence in Singapore in the second half of 2026, creating more than 100 specialist roles.

The centre will develop AI capabilities for deployment across the bank’s global network. Initial priorities include improving customer interactions in wealth management, deploying agentic AI tools for treasury activities, and building AI-enabled digital payments capabilities.

HSBC plans to recruit professionals in natural language processing, data science, AI governance, and human-centred design. Those hires will work with David Rice, HSBC’s first Chief AI Officer, appointed to the role in April 2026 after serving as chief operating officer of the bank’s corporate and institutional division. Rice is responsible for enterprise-wide AI adoption, including governance, partnerships, and extending generative AI tools to all staff.

Group Chief Executive Georges Elhedery described the Singapore hub as central to the bank’s goal of delivering personalised, real-time customer experiences at scale while maintaining human judgement and accountability in decisions.

HSBC also plans to work with educational institutions and government bodies in Singapore to develop a local AI talent pipeline and support emerging technology disciplines.

Several global banks have been working to scale AI deployment more broadly. HSBC’s choice of Singapore reflects the city’s established technology sector and a regulatory environment that supports financial innovation.

HSBC has used AI in cybersecurity, transaction monitoring, and risk assessment for several years. The Singapore centre and the appointment of a dedicated Chief AI Officer represent a more coordinated approach to applying those tools across the bank.
