Wayne Freeman Exits Dual CTO Role at NatWest Boxed and Mettle #
Wayne Freeman has stepped down as chief technology officer of NatWest Boxed and Mettle, the two digital banking units of NatWest Group where he held a combined technology leadership role, according to his LinkedIn announcement and reporting by FinTech Futures.
Freeman confirmed the departure in a LinkedIn post, tagging references to NatWest Boxed, fintech, and embedded finance. The bank has not publicly named a successor to lead the technology function across either business.
He joined Mettle in November 2019 with more than 25 years of experience in software engineering and financial technology. Before NatWest Group, Freeman served as VP of Engineering at international money transfer company WorldRemit and as Director of Software Engineering at Capital One in the UK. His earlier career included technical roles at Amazon and, later, at Bó, NatWest’s now-discontinued standalone consumer digital bank, before he moved to Mettle.
In his dual CTO role, Freeman oversaw the technical strategy for both NatWest Boxed and Mettle. NatWest Boxed is the bank’s Banking-as-a-Service unit. It supplies white-label and embedded banking infrastructure to third-party brands, fintechs, and enterprise partners that want to integrate regulated financial products into their own platforms. Mettle, which launched in 2019, is a fee-free, mobile-first business current account built for UK sole traders, freelancers, and small limited companies, with features including tax estimation and dedicated savings pots.
Freeman spoke at industry events including Money20/20 Europe and FStech’s Future of FinTech conference and participated in discussions on technology leadership in digital banking.
Freeman’s departure follows other leadership changes at NatWest’s digital units. The bank previously appointed Michelle Prance as CEO of Mettle, while Andy Ellis, a former Mettle chief, moved to run NatWest Boxed.
NatWest Group had not released a public statement on Freeman’s departure at the time of publication.
