European Parliament backs development of online and offline digital euro #

The European Parliament has voted to support further development of a digital euro, endorsing plans for both online and offline functionality. Lawmakers said the proposed central bank digital currency should complement cash and existing electronic payments, while ensuring privacy safeguards and accessibility across the euro area

The Parliament’s position outlines conditions including limits on holdings to prevent financial instability, strong data protection standards, and continued access to physical cash. The backing moves the project into the next phase of legislative negotiations, as the European Central Bank continues technical work on the potential design and infrastructure of the digital euro.
