Deutsche Bank launches Wero to support simpler and sovereign digital payments in Europe #
Deutsche Bank has announced the launch of Wero, a new European digital payments solution designed to enable account-to-account payments without reliance on international card schemes. The service is built as part of the European Payments Initiative (EPI) and aims to provide consumers and merchants with a pan-European alternative for everyday digital payments, starting with instant peer-to-peer transfers
Wero is intended to strengthen Europe’s payments sovereignty by keeping transactions within European infrastructure and regulatory frameworks. Deutsche Bank said the solution will gradually expand to support online and in-store payments, subscriptions, and additional use cases. The launch reflects a broader industry push to reduce fragmentation in European payments and offer locally governed alternatives to global card networks and big-tech wallets.
