Bank of England publishes business case studies on where a digital pound could add value #

The Bank of England has released a series of business case studies examining how a potential digital pound could improve payments for UK organisations. The studies explore scenarios where a central bank digital currency (CBDC) might support faster settlement, reduce operational friction and enable new payment use cases across sectors such as retail, financial services, and e-commerce. Companies highlighted potential benefits in areas including programmable payments, automated reconciliation, and improved liquidity management

The findings are part of the Bank’s ongoing exploratory work on the design and viability of a digital pound. While no final decision has been made on whether to launch a CBDC, the institution continues to assess technical, economic and privacy considerations alongside industry feedback. The study results will help inform future phases of the digital pound programme, particularly the evaluation of real-world commercial applications and the infrastructure required to support them.
