Klarna and German Sparkassen introduce variable recurring payments #

Klarna has announced a partnership with Germany’s Sparkasse Finanzgruppe to introduce variable recurring payments (VRP) for customers in the German market. According to the company’s official press release, the collaboration enables consumers to authorise flexible, automated payments directly from their bank accounts—covering use cases such as subscriptions, utility bills, and top-ups—while maintaining full control over spending limits and permissions

The integration builds on open banking technology, allowing Klarna to connect with participating Sparkassen banks through secure APIs under PSD2-compliant frameworks. Unlike traditional recurring payments, VRP gives consumers real-time visibility and revocation rights, increasing transparency and reducing friction in everyday transactions

Klarna said the launch marks a key step toward advancing open finance adoption in Europe and aligns with its mission to modernise payment experiences through automation and user-centric design. The partnership is one of the first large-scale implementations of VRP in Germany and could pave the way for wider use of programmable payments across the EU.
