People’s Bank of China Opens Digital Yuan Operations Centre in Shanghai #
The People’s Bank of China (PBoC) has established a new digital yuan operations centre in Shanghai, reinforcing the city’s role as a hub for China’s central bank digital currency (CBDC) development. The centre will oversee technology, testing, and rollout of the e-CNY, which has already been piloted in more than 30 cities and integrated into services such as public transport, retail, and government payments
The new facility highlights Beijing’s intent to accelerate the national adoption of the digital yuan, particularly in major metropolitan areas with high transaction volumes. It will also coordinate work with banks, payment providers, and technology partners to broaden acceptance and build use cases for both domestic and cross-border payments
The move comes as China continues to lead globally in CBDC implementation, positioning the e-CNY as a strategic tool for financial innovation and potentially for international trade settlement. Analysts suggest the Shanghai hub could play a pivotal role in scaling the digital yuan beyond pilot programs.
