UK Regulator Proposes Scrapping £100 Contactless Limit, Letting Banks Set Their Own Caps #
Britain’s Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has proposed removing the current £100 ceiling on contactless card payments and allowing card providers to set limits tailored to their customers. The plan forms part of a wider package to boost digital payments and convenience, with a public consultation running until 15 October and assurances that existing fraud protections and reimbursement rules would remain in place
If adopted, the change would align cards more closely with mobile wallets that already support higher-value tap payments, while letting providers offer user-level controls (such as setting personal limits or disabling contactless). The FCA says many banks already provide these features, and that flexibility could reduce checkout friction without weakening consumer safeguards.
